Connecting with Nature

Central Park Fall - Journaling for Nature Patricia Denys/Synergydogs media

The Ritual of Recording, The Art of Storytelling, Reflection is The Act of Connecting with Nature

Nature is transforming. Fall is almost here. It is a great time for reflection, for connecting. Winter is next and the animals are preparing. Reflection is about contemplation. It is about moving forward. Life is movement. Those of us involved with animals and nature on a daily basis know that the experience is not always easy or positive. We persevere. We hold on to certain experiences like holding our breath.

Reflecting on Nature is a healthy and organic way to connect in the simple act of journaling.

Why do we record, keep journals, photograph, write or create art? Humans tell stories, they share experiences, they pass information down to others. This is the ritual of recording. It is meant to ensure things are not forgotten. This is the art of storytelling. In this workshop we explore the process of storytelling through imagery and words. Journaling can be considered collecting with more intention. We collage, assemble, draw, and/or write. A journal is usually known in book form. Journaling can also be in a box. A collection can be on a wall, or it can take on a whole new form as you create it. Journaling is the ritual of recording one’s experiences. The process of this ritual is what we will be discussing in an explorative virtual workshop.

The Ritual of Recording, The Art of Storytelling

In the workshop we will explore journaling through history. We will feature works from Leonardo Da Vinci, Frida Kahlo, Judy Chicago, Maira Kaman and many others to discover why so many creatives have turned to the ritual of recording. Journaling helps us to be present in the space. It allows us to truly experience an event, place, person and/or animal experience. With deep introspection, thoughtful application and careful attention we experience the event with all our senses. NO ART EXPERIENCE NEEDED. This process isn’t about artmaking and the judgement that comes with that (either internally or externally). This is about the process. As photographer Daniel Eldon has coined, “The Journey IS the Destination”. This workshop proves the process IS the experience.
